London Calling

REVERB
For Guns N' Roses, London Called Early

By Duff McKagan, Thursday, 11 March 2010

I am in London this week looking at a bunch of unsigned bands for a new venture that I am part of. It is fresh and fun to see some of these bands: startled kids with huge and hopeful eyes that see a world that is theirs for the taking, energetic, unjaded, and full of piss and vinegar. I need to see this now and again to remind me what music should be all about. It also reminds me of the first time I came over here: It was with GN'R in July of '87, a few weeks before Appetite for Destruction came out.

The year before, we had put out the Live Like a Suicide EP. This fast and furious collection of songs sort of just died everywhere else in the world except for the UK. Unbeknownst to us, a cult following of fans was building over here who were chomping at the bit for any news on the band. When Kerrang magazine sent a photographer to Los Angeles to shoot us for the cover, we couldn't actually believe it. We had received press coverage in LA at this point, but KERRANG?! Are you kidding me?

After we finished Appetite and were waiting for its release and tour opportunities, we were approached to go to London and play the famous Marquee club. The only place I had been outside the US was Vancouver, BC, to play punk-rock shows with my various Seattle bands when I was a teenager. This was BIG! Huge! Magnificent!

I think it's assumed these days that GN'R kind of "broke" straight from the get-go after the release of AFD. Truth is, it took us nearly a year of straight touring before anyone paid attention to us in a significant manner--except for the UK.

An odd clash of circumstances occurred in Britain about a year before Live Like a Suicide came out. Back then and before the Internet, the youth over here would sort of latch on to one rock-and-roll band and identify it as their clarion light. That band was Hanoi Rocks, an amazing group of Finns who had relocated to England and were writing some of the best and dirtiest rock songs. When Hanoi finally came to tour America for the first time in 1985, their drummer Razzle died in a car crash while making a booze run with Vince Neil in LA I had just moved to Hollywood, and Slash and I had tickets to that Hanoi gig that never happened. It was an incredibly sad moment not only in rock and roll, but all the way around. Hanoi Rocks never quite recovered.

Flash forward to our gig in the UK, July 1987. After the first Marquee gig sold out in record time, they added a second date. That sold out just as fast, so they added a third. By the time we arrived here (we stayed at a rent-by-the-week apartment because it was much cheaper than a hotel), we were kind of like little mini-celebrities. There were times that people would stop us on the street and they actually knew who we were! It was quite weird, even on a small scale.

I learned to ride the tube everywhere, and it just seemed that there were great gigs every night we were there. Slash and I went out to a suburb one night to see the Replacements, and got so drunk that we lost track where we were. We caught a tube to somewhere that was not anywhere even close to our apartment in Kensington. We got into a drunken fight when we got to the end of the line, and realized that there were no more trains running and that we didn't have anything close to the amount of money to take a cab. Come to think of it, I doubt we even knew the address of where we were staying; we only knew how to get there from our local tube stop. To this day, I am not sure how we ever got back that night. Did we sleep in the train station? Ah, the luck and providence shown to the young and drunken and foolish!

But the real reason we were here, of course, was to fucking rock. I must say that back in that period of the band's career, nobody did it with more purpose, sneer, and reckless bad intent than us. This is not me bragging - it's just that we were hitting on all the right cylinders at the same time. When we walked to the Marquee on that first night, we were met by the crowd that was in line surrounding the block. We were absolutely fucking amazed that all these people came to see us. We hung out there in the street with them before and after those three gigs. We found that we had suddenly become "that" band that the youth of England had been looking for to fill the void left after Hanoi Rocks' tragic demise. Within four years, we would be headlining in stadiums here.

I am here now as a real grown-up, an adult doing very "adult-like" business and meeting with real-life businessmen. I am glad to be taken seriously in these meetings, and for certain feel that I have earned the right to be doing the things that I do outside of just playing music. Coming back to London, though, always puts a smile on my face. That first 10-day stay here as a young man will forever be a brilliant memory that will always keep me from becoming jaded.

The Stream Dream

Hello fellow Guns N' Roses fans!

2010 is certainly shaping up to be an exciting year. The Canadian dates are approaching fast (5 Days!), GN'R is heading to South America in March, and there are rumors of European dates for the Summer.

There's been a lot of talk about getting a live stream going of one of the shows.

Considering that we are the greatest fan community in the world, I thought we might try and take matters into our own hands.

http://www.ustream.tv/

Welcome to USTREAM. A free service which connects to your phone through a free application and enables you to stream live to the web via an embeddable (like YouTube, see below) video.

Now that anyone with an iPhone can stream, we could theoretically stream every show on the tour.

Check out this gear:

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/01/05/second-generation-blue-microphones-mikey-announced-uses-free-ap

The "Mikey" (by Blue Microphones)
promises to be a powerful professional recording solution for iPhone owners when it arrives in the spring. Mikey still features two Blue mic capsules for pro-quality stereo recording, but now has improved acoustic circuitry for better recordings of loud events such as concerts.
$99!

This is potentially exciting news, and if anyone wants to shoot me an email, you can find my address at the top right of this page or just tweet me @MackArillo

Now read this: Ustream Broadcaster could mean more concert videos streaming live online
After signing up for a Ustream account, users can hit the "go live" button and start streaming video from the iPhone's camera to their Ustream website profiles. The app is available as a free download and even runs on older iPhones that don't have built-in video recording features.

Here's some homework for you Thursday night: Search Ustream for Metallica or Morrissey. Even if you didn't get tickets, you won't have to miss a beat.
Happy 2010 and Beyond ...

"Street of Dreams" Hits #44 on Canadian Rock Chart

Rockstar Weekly
With Canada gearing up for the new Guns N' Roses tour in early 2010, GN'R has officially entered the Canadian rock radio charts with "Street Of Dreams," the new single from last year's Chinese Democracy CD.

The song debuted on the Canadian Active Rock Charts at number 44, ahead of debuts from Canadian rockers Default and Seattle rockers Alice In Chains. "Street Of Dreams" follows "Better," which reached Top 15 and "Chinese Democracy," which made it to number 3.

Additionally, according to Neilsen/Soundscan, GN'R Greatest Hits is currently at number 19 on the Canadian Rock Album Charts. The album has been on the charts for 297 weeks and has risen one point over the past two weeks. Chinese Democracy topped the charts in its first week of release in 2008, selling 70,000 copies in Canada. The last time GN'R topped the charts prior to that was in 1991 with Use Your Illusion II.

The band is off to Asia this week for a couple concerts and then embarks on the Canadian tour starting in Winnipeg on January 13.

More "Spies"

Today's update comes courtesy of DJ Will (KNAC) who posted this on the Metal Sludge Gossip boards. The info comes via Rancid Punks over at MyGNR
"I'm shocked this guy brought a camera & reported anything ... after the head production manager made two announcemets ... No Cameras!

I was there one night and it was pretty cool I must say.

No Axl of course.

Well, without giving away the full set (I promised Del!), they did a complete run through of about 17-18 songs for about a week. Lots of visuals that complement each track - pyro, spots, etc. Nice lighting truss design plus a fucking bad ass re-working of a theme song that leads into "Live & Let Die" written by Richard Fortus. Overall well done.

I loved "Shackler's Revenge," "Better," "Prostitute" & "Rocket Queen" live.

FYI: That middle ramp/riser has Axl's grand piano under it for quick access."
Thanks to Rancid Punks and DJ Will for this sneak peak into what is shaping up to be a "monumental" stage show.

What the Spies Said

Notes from the arena dress rehearsals in LA:

Richard Fortus is playing through a 1973 Jose Marshall along with a Friedman "Marsha" amp and some modified Randall modules, all driven by a Randall RT-2 power amp. His pedals are incorporated with all of the above (pictured) and are racked and switched through a custom system built by Dave Friedman of Rack Systems Ltd. Fortus has 2 Randall isolation cabinets with Celestion Golds and Celestion G12H loudspeakers. He's playing a Chet Atkins Gretsch guitar, a Gibson ES-335 and a bunch of Fender Telecasters and Gibson Les Pauls.

DJ is also using a "Marsha," as well as a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier tube amp. The Mesa Boogie plugs into a 4x12 with Golds and the Marsha is using V30's. DJ has a ton of different Les Paul's he's playing with.

Ron is sticking with his Engl heads played through Marshall 4x12s. He's using Vigier guitars. He has a double-neck Vigier with a fretless.

... And, just in case you were wondering, the lineup is still: Axl, Dizzy, Tommy, Chris, Richard, Ron, DJ and Frank

GN'R Blames Major League Baseball for Band's Silence on Tour

Band has it's lackeys "call-out" MLB Senior Editor Doug Miller.

We've all noticed the lack of updates on GunsNRoses.com ever since the recruitment of DJ Ashba (March 21, 2009).

With the Japanese dates coming up and the Canadian ones scheduled, one would expect the band to actually get off their asses and update the official website with the usual fluff-talk about how it's going to be great, et al. The effort is mostly symbolic; that way people would know that the band acknowledges the dates and is committed to them. Last month, Mysteron seemed to agree with this on this back at HTGTH:

"It is important though that the band add credence by putting these dates on their official website. An official announcement would be even better."

However, yesterday, Mysteron, a beloved 'insider' at the HTGTH community, went completely around and posted the following:

"I want to apologize to GN'R for my comments. MLB currently own the rights to, and control input to, the official GN'R website. However ...dot dot dot Hopefully Guns can find another official way to communicate with the fans in the meantime."

MLB.com and former GN'R manager Merck Mercuriadis came into an agreement of sorts in 2006 regarding the online shop features of GN'R dot com. While the domain listings maintain the ownership of GNR.com is solely in the hands of our man Axl, technical and administrative contacts direct one solely to MLB.com staff. Go figure.

MLB.com have apparently stepped back of providing content around the Japanese dates of the 2007 tour. Before this, most (if not all) articles on the GN'R site were written by their local Senior Writer Doug Miller, who currently continues to write for MLB.com. However, the website managed to be updated semi-regularly up to the recruitment of DJ Ashba, with or without MLB.com's direct consent.

So, bummer. The CD release came and went and no-one at MLB had a problem with the content. It's only a year after that GN'R, having clandestinely sneaked in numerous updates, have finally reached the end of their rope.

I do hope Guns find another official way to communicate with the fans. GN'R Online was an Interscope-manned site, who must've forgotten the password somewhere in early 2003, before transforming it more into the line of their generic band websites.

The only dangerous thing about the modern GNR is their dangerously sloppy management.

Thanks to copperye at GNREvolution who originally wrote this piece.

For futher discussion.

Slash Wants to Leave Days of Guns N' Roses Behind

via Spinner
Slash has said he wants to leave his days as a member of Guns N' Roses behind him as he prepares to release his first solo album.

"I just feel for people that don't seem to get it. All things considered, it's been a really long time, and everybody's moved on," he told BBC 6 Music.

"At the same time I appreciate that I was part of a band that had such a huge impact and touched so many people, and I feel bad for them that it's not around - but it is what it is..."

His forthcoming solo album will be released on Roadrunner next spring and features the vocal talents of Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, Lemmy, Fergie, and Andrew Stockdale.

He said he had taken his time to lift the lid on the heavyweight guests appearing on the record. "I've been very low key on this, because I was waiting for all the releases for all the different singers, but some of the cats are out of the bag. There's a lot of people on the record."

He added, "It's just nice to be in charge of my own destiny, even if it's just for one record. Just not to be in a group situation, and at the mercy of what everybody as a whole feels, but being responsible for my own decisions and having the final say. It's nice, ‘cause I've been doing this diplomatic band stuff for so long, I needed to get it out of my system."

All that diplomacy has given Slash some skills to take to his work as a solo artist, especially when collaborating with vocalists.

"As a musician, the more experience you get from playing with a lot of different people, the more you learn how to adapt.

The other is perseverance - keep going no matter what. To establish in your mind what you're going to do, and you just keep plodding along. The longer you do it, the more you realise that you have a purpose."

Slash has another hope for his solo effort – that it might stop people asking him if he's going to rejoin Guns N' Roses.

Slash Can Stand Under Rihanna's Um-ber-ella

(Slash & MJ photo via gunsnfuckingroses.tumblr.com)

I guess she figures: "Why put Richard Fortus on your record, when you can just use the 'real deal?'"

Music producer BigChris Flores released some great news via Twitter! Looks like Rihanna is taking her rock edge to a new level by working with rock royalty.

The music producer updated his Twitter with the following messages:

- Got L.A. Reid coming to the studio with Slash today, to lay guitars on a new Rihanna song.

- Session with Slash for Rihanna went great.

Slash contributes guitar to the appropriately titled "Rockstar 101."

In the video below, Slash talks about his collaboration with Japanese Singer Koshi Inaba (thanks Blabbermouth).

Guns N' Roses To Play Thunder Bay

("Skinny Axl" by Sandy Yagi)

Guns N' Roses in Thunder Bay?

The band released their Canadian tour dates on October 19, and Thunder Bay was not listed.

However word is out that the city has been added to the tour in what is being called an "Off-Day Headline show" on January 22, 2010.

"Skid Row vocalist Sebastian Bach will support Guns N' Roses alongside Danko Jones on the band's upcoming Canadian tour. He has announced an off-day headline show for Thunder Bay, Ontario on January 22nd at The Roxy".

The word on this show comes early this morning. Is it a Halloween trick or a treat for Thunder Bay's fans of metal? Time will tell.

Irving Azoff On Plagiarism Lawsuit

Guns N' Roses manager Irving Azoff has responded to the Ulrich Schnauss lawsuit with this statement:

"The band vigorously contests these claims and intends to respond accordingly."

He added the band and production team’s legal reps will be responding SOON, as well.

YOU CAN DOWNLOAD AND READ THE FULL COMPLAINT HERE.

His full statement follows:

"The band believed when the record came out and still believes that there are no unauthorized samples on the track.

The snippets of ‘ambient noise’ in question were provided by a member of the album’s production team who has assured us that these few seconds of sound were obtained legitimately. Artists these days can’t read the minds of those they collaborate with and therefore are unfortunately vulnerable to claims like this one.

While the band resents the implication that they would ever use another artist’s work improperly and are assessing possible counterclaims, they are confident this situation will be satisfactorily resolved."

Guns N' Roses Sued for Plagiarism

Two independent record labels sued U.S. rock band Guns N' Roses for $1 million, claiming the group used portions of two songs by a German musician on their last album Chinese Democracy.

Guns N' Roses and Universal Music Group's Interscope-Geffen A&M label were sued by British label Independiente and the US arm of Domino Recording Company, who own the licensing rights to songs by German electronic musician Ulrich Schnauss.

Singer Axl Rose and Guns N' Roses band members and album producers copied portions of two of Schnauss' songs -- "Wherever You Are" and "A Strangely Isolated Place" -- for a song used on the band's last album called "Riad N' the Bedouins," according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit, filed on Friday but made available on Monday, seeks $1 million in damages. A spokesperson for Interscope-Geffen A&M, owned by Vivendi's Universal Music Group, was not available for comment.
